IDB Invest and The Nature Conservancy Join Forces to Advance Nature-Based Solutions in the Amazon Region

IDB Invest and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a framework for collaboration to promote nature-based solutions across the Amazon region. This partnership aims to increase social and economic growth through initiatives focused on sustainable supply chains, large-scale reforestation, and socio-bioeconomy models.

Both organizations will work together to identify, structure, and mobilize funding for high-impact nature-based projects. The cooperation will combine expertise and resources to drive investments in reforestation concessions, promote regenerative agriculture, encourage private-sector engagement, and co-create innovative socio-bioeconomy models that integrate biodiversity conservation with economic opportunities for local communities.

“The private sector can play an essential role in the sustainable development of the Amazon region. Since the launch of the Amazonia Forever regional coordination program in 2023, we have seen progress in areas such as energy, infrastructure, and access to finance,” said James Scriven, CEO of IDB Invest. “Our collaboration with TNC aims to unlock the crucial potential for private investment in nature-based solutions, which can achieve immense social and economic impact.”

“Nature-based solutions represent an opportunity to create a new economy that not only conserves our vital natural resources but also ensures an equitable future for local communities,” mentioned Paula Caballero, Regional Managing Director for Latin America at TNC. “This collaboration is a significant step forward in our collective journey to co-develop locally led, sustainable economies that create jobs, generate incomes, and value Indigenous and local knowledge. By driving community well-being, restoring biodiversity, and enhancing carbon stocks, we can achieve a truly sustainable future.”

The collaboration includes technical assistance, capacity-building initiatives, and joint fundraising efforts. It will also support key innovative financial initiatives such as the Amazonia Finance Network (AFN) and leverage synergies with other initiatives, including the Catalytic Capital for Agricultural Transition (CCAT) Fund and the Innovative Finance for the Amazon, Cerrado, and Chaco (IFACC).

This agreement will adhere to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) principles to ensure meaningful engagement and participation for the Indigenous Peoples and traditional communities in the Amazon region.

It marks a significant step toward scaling nature-based solutions in Latin America and the Caribbean, combining financial innovation with sustainability best practices to protect critical ecosystems while fostering long-term economic resilience.
