Project scope and objective

The project consists of a corporate loan to Sabesp to assist Tietê River Depollution Program – Stage IV. The purpose is to help restore the water quality of the Tietê River, in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, Brazil, through the expansion of sewage coverage and wastewater treatment capacity. This program encompasses various activities, including: (i) expansion of the wastewater treatment capacity by 3 m3/sec, covering the Parque Novo Mundo and São Miguel Paulista Sewage Treatment Stations (ETEs), as well as the expansion of the solid phase of the ETE Barueri for 16 m3/sec; (ii) construction of 200 km of collection networks and 160 km of interceptors and trunk collectors and (iii) strengthening of Sabesp's management capabilities and instruments.

With the implementation of the project, it will be possible to achieve high levels of sanitary sewage collection and treatment in the area where Sabesp operates in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. The project will benefit, directly and indirectly, 34 municipalities and around 3.7 million inhabitants. contributing to the universalization service until 2033, as promoted by the New Sanitation Law.

 

 

* In December 2022, the Franco da Rocha Wastewater Treatment Plant (“WWTP”) was incorporated into the Tietê River Depollution Project – Phase IV. Both the Environmental and Social Review Summary (ESRS) and the Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP), which were disclosed in April 2022, contemplates this new infrastructure and Sabesp commits to apply IDB Invest’s Sustainability Policy during the construction and operation of the WWTP.

Environmental and social review

IDB Invest conducts an environmental and social due diligence (ESDD) commensurate with the nature, scale, and stage of the project, and with its level of environmental and social risks and impacts. The ESDD will confirm the project E&S categorization and assess the project with respect to the client requirements in IDB Invest Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy. The results of the ESDD, including any identified gaps are described in the Environmental and Social Review Summary (ESRS) provided below. For projects approved as of 2016, any gaps with respect to IDB Invest's Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy at the time of the ESDD are addressed in the Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) presented below, to comply with the date mentioned above.
