IDB Invest Partners with Omni S.A. to Expand Credit Access for Microentrepreneurs in Brazil
- An innovative bond structure enhances access to credit for self-employed workers, low-income populations and small businesses in Brazil.
WASHINGTON - IDB Invest subscribed to 200 million reais (approximately US$40 million) in Letras Financeiras issued by Omni S.A. Crédito, Financiamento e Investimento, a Brazilian financial institution specializing in vehicle and microenterprise financing, to expand its truck and motorcycle loan portfolios, increasing access to credit for self-employed workers, micro and small enterprises, and low-income populations across Brazil. This initiative also seeks to strengthen small businesses and improve livelihoods by enabling the acquisition of vehicles.
The financing structure consists of a public offering of $500 million reais in two series. Institutional investors subscribed to the $300 million reais Series 1 while IDB Invest exclusively subscribed to the $200 million reais Series 2. This marks IDB Invest’s first public subscription of Letras Financeiras, long-term debt instruments issued by Brazilian banks to raise capital.
Brazil’s microentrepreneurs have typically had limited access to credit because of their risk profiles and the high transaction costs for banks. Omni’s decentralized agent model and specialized underwriting process position it as a strategic partner to expand access to credit.
Beyond financing, IDB Invest will provide advisory services to Omni to support the development of a Sustainable Bond Framework and a portfolio analysis to study ways imbalance in the credit offerings among different client groups. These initiatives aim to enhance Omni’s ESG practices and prepare the institution for future thematic bond issuances.
This transaction demonstrates IDB Invest’s catalytic role in improving the financial health of microentrepreneurs and supporting resilient business models that serve vulnerable communities.
