With over 25 years of experience in the regional financial services industry sector, Stephen Thomas is a leader in promoting sustainable development of banking and securities markets in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), as well as driving financial innovation that contributes to impact in the region.
Currently, Stephen Thomas is the Director of Financial Institutions for the Caribbean region at IDB Invest, the private sector arm of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group. A dual citizen of The Bahamas and Trinidad & Tobago, his responsibilities range from designing strategies aimed at providing financial and advisory solutions to clients. Stephen plays a pivotal role in driving the origination and structuring of financing solutions with a focus on green, social, and sustainable finance, for the financial sector and capital markets in the Caribbean. Additionally, he oversees a multinational team of professionals, driving growth and sustainability in the region.
Before joining the IDB Group, he was the Deputy General Manager at First Citizens Group based in Trinidad and Tobago, where he led the brokerage, wealth management and client facing divisions, across all of its footprint countries. Prior to that, he was the Vice President of Citibank Trinidad Limited, responsible for the bank’s regional Debt Capital Markets and Trading desks, as well as its Public Sector and Financial Institutions Group. He also earlier held senior leadership roles in asset management, corporate and commercial banking as well as securities industry regulation across the industry.
Stephen holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of the West Indies, and a Master’s in Business Administration McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, Washington D.C. (USA), as well as several diplomas in sustainable finance from global universities.
